Quick Estimate vs. Detailed Estimate

Quick Estimate uses your total annual income and allocates it to a recently retired initial income mix. For Social Security, it estimates the federally taxable portion using the standard federal provisional-income formula and the income generated by that mix (assuming no tax-exempt interest), rather than automatically using 85%. When you switch to Detailed Estimate, the Quick Estimate allocation is carried into the detailed fields so you can see and edit the breakdown. Detailed Estimate lets you enter your actual income categories and should generally provide the more relevant comparison.

Important input definitions

Wages / business / other ordinary
Taxable earned or ordinary income not entered elsewhere.
Taxable interest
Interest that is included in taxable income. The calculator does not separately identify U.S. Treasury interest or state-specific municipal-bond interest, which may be exempt from state income tax; adjust the taxable-interest entry as appropriate for the state being evaluated.
Ordinary dividends
Taxable dividends that are not qualified dividends.
Qualified dividends
Dividends reported as qualified for federal purposes; state treatment may differ from federal treatment.
Short-term capital gains
Net taxable capital gains on assets generally held one year or less.
Long-term capital gains
Net taxable investment/securities gains on assets generally held more than one year. Special gains such as exempt real estate or business-sale items may require separate treatment and are outside this simplified model.
IRA/401(k) RMDs or withdrawals
Taxable required minimum distributions (RMDs) or other taxable withdrawals from traditional retirement accounts.
Roth conversion
The taxable amount converted from a traditional IRA/retirement account to a Roth account.
Pension
Taxable private/qualified pension income. Special military, public-safety and other source-specific pension rules are outside the standard assumptions.
Social Security benefits
Total annual Social Security benefits received.
Federally taxable Social Security
Calculated automatically from Social Security benefits and the other entered income using federal provisional-income rules. Provisional income is not the same as total income and can include tax-exempt interest, which MoveTax does not currently request. If you know your actual federally taxable Social Security amount, you can override the calculated value. Some states use this amount or related income thresholds in determining state treatment.

Important output definitions

Estimated state tax
Estimated state-level individual income tax for the entered scenario and tax year.
Effective rate
Estimated state tax divided by total income entered in the calculator.
Savings vs. current state
The difference between estimated tax in your current state and the comparison state.
Marginal ordinary / LTCG / Roth
The estimated state tax rate on the next increment of that type of income, based on the calculator's modeled rules.
